Washington, D.C. May 20, 2009. The National Whistleblowers Center today disclosed a new campaign of censorship and retaliation by the Army Corps of Engineers directed against whistleblower Bunnatine (Bunny) H. Greenhouse.

Within hours of testifying in Congress, Ms. Greenhouse received an email from the Army Corps Chief of Staff demanding pre-clearance of any testimony Greenhouse may wish to present to Congress.  Ironically, Greenhouse's testimony was presented before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform about legislation aimed at protecting whistleblowers from just this kind of action.

Senators Chuck Grassley and Claire McCaskill today said that they are working to keep Congress living by the same rules as everybody else.  They have introduced legislation that would give the same whistleblower protections to employees in the legislative branch as to those afforded in the executive branch of government.

I think I made the case pretty strongly in my piece today on why the failure of the stimulus bill to protect private contractor whistleblowers, and the omission in the Senate version to even protect federal employees, is a serious problem.

One of America’s top federal prosecutors, Richard Convertino lost his job after blowing the whistle on incompetence in the Bush Administration’s “war on terror.”  High ranking Justice Department officials leaked confidential information in an attempt to discredit Mr. Convertino.  This case is ongoing.

Mrs. Greenhouse stood alone in opposing the approval of a highly improper multi-billion dollar no-bid contract to Halliburton for the reconstruction of Iraqi Oil. In return for her courage she was retaliated against and removed from her position as the Procurement Executive, the highest-ranking civilian-contracting official at the Army Corps of Engineers. Her case continues today.

Washington D.C. April 27, 2010. Today, former U.S. Special Counsel Scott Bloch pleaded guilty to criminal contempt of Congress for withholding "pertinent" evidence from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee concerning his misconduct in office.  Bloch was forced to resign in October 2008 amid allegations that he retaliated against employees and dismissed whistleblower cases without fully investigating them. 

Washington, D.C. October 7, 2009.  Today the Treasury Inspector General For Tax Administration (TIGTA) released a report finding that "deficiencies exist" in the IRS program designed to promote whistleblower disclosures of tax fraud.  The TIGTA report found that some of the major deficiencies were "inadequate procedures and processes" for administering whistleblower claims, the failure to "timely process" whistleblower claims, and a loophole in the law which can result in employees being retaliated against for filing whistleblower claims to the IRS.

Washington, D.C. February 9, 2009.  Bunnatine ("Bunny") H. Greenhouse, the highest ranking procurement official to oppose the no-bid, cost plus contracts to Halliburton for the  reconstruction of Iraq, weighed in on the need for Congress to include real whistlebower protections as part of the stimulus-bailout bill (read her letter).
