Meet the Whistleblowers
William Marcus
marcusAs Senior Science Advisor at the EPA, William Marcus was fired when he documented that a policy approved by the Office of Drinking Water could lead to an increase in cancer.  His case set a national precedent when he became the first EPA employee to obtain protection under environmental whistleblower statutes.

Marrita Murphy

Marrita Murphy challenged the unfair taxation of compensation and damages awarded to illegally fired whistleblowers.  Although she was initially successful, the court of appeals buckled under pressure from the government and reversed its decision.  The campaign to end unfair taxation continues.

James Bobreski
James Bobreski was fired and blacklisted after exposing the threat of chlorine gas contamination in Washington, D.C.  He was vindicated in one case and is currently pursuing a case that alleges that he has been blacklisted.
Vera English

Vera English was a pioneer whistleblower in the 1980’s.  Ms. English was fired from General Electric after exposing widespread radiation contamination. Her Supreme Court case established the right of whistleblowers to pursue cases under state law.

Dr. Jonathan Fishbein

fishbein21 Dr. Jonathan Fishbein is one of the highest-ranking drug whistleblowers in American history.  He was fired from his position as Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office for Policy in Clinical Research Operations after exposing misconduct in AIDS drug safety clinical trials.  Dr. Fishbein won his whistleblower case and was reinstated setting a national precedent protecting government doctors from retaliation.

Jeffrey Wigand
jeffrey_wigand Dr. Jeffrey Wigand exposed safety problems related to the tobacco industry.  A former vice president of Brown and Williamson, Dr. Wigand blew the whistle on the tabacco industry's manipulation of nicotine.  He is credited with being the key witness in successful tobacco reform law suits.  Dr. Wigand's case was portrayed in the film The Insider.

Karen Silkwood
karen_silkwood_225 Americans first nuclear whistleblower, Karen Silkwood, discovered numerous health violations, including exposure to high levels of nuclear contamination, at the Kerr-McGee nuclear power plant. Her case was highlighted in the movie Silkwood.  She died in a mysterious car accident on the way to provide documentation of safety violations to a New York Times reporter.

Linda Tripp

tripplk Linda Tripp made disclosures to the Office of Independent Counsel that the president  had lied under oath resulting in the sitting president being found in contempt of court and losing his law license.  The Department of Defense retaliated by leaking inflammatory confidential information from Ms. Tripp's personnel file. Ms. Tripp reached a settlement in her Privacy Act lawsuit with the Federal Government.

Cynthia Cooper and Sherron Watkins
timemagazineCynthia Cooper and Sherron Watkins exposed corporate misconduct in the infamous  Enron and WorldCom scandals paving the way for the enactment of the SOX corporate reform law.  In recognition of their whistleblowing, Cooper and Watkins (along with Coleen Rowley) were named Time Persons of the Year in 2002.

Daniel Ellsberg
