All federal employees badly need strong whistleblower protections consistent with the protections enjoyed by private sector workers. The Senate version of the WPEA contains some improvements, but falls far short of the comprehensive whistleblower law reforms promised in the 2008 political campaign.

Federal employees need to be fully protected and encouraged to report waste, fraud and abuse. While the Senate version of the WPEA is a step in the right direction, federal employees will still lack important protections when they report fraud against the taxpayers if the Senate version of the bill becomes law.

We are deeply concerned that the WPEA bill will be watered down further once the House takes up the measure.

We urge the House to enact a WPEA bill that is consistent with the stronger version of the law the House passed in 2007 with overwhelming bi-partisan support.

The National Whistleblowers Center (NWC) assists some of America's leading whistleblowers including FBI whistleblower Dr. Frederic Whitehurst, Army Corps of Engineer whistleblower Bunnatine "Bunny" Greenhouse and six employees at the Food and Drug Administration reporting illegal surveillance of federal employee whistleblowers. Officers of the NWC have testified at Senate and House hearings on the WPEA.
