History

Since 1988, the NWC, whistleblowers supported by the NWC and attorneys representing these whistleblowers have achieved victories for environmental protection, government contract fraud, nuclear safety and government and corporate accountability. Victories include the following:

  • Winning reinstatement for the highest ranking nuclear whistleblower
  • Using the Freedom of Information Act to force government agencies to release hundreds of thousands of pages of information documenting government misconduct
  • Exposing misconduct at the World Trade Center and the 9/11 crime scenes, including theft by FBI agents and the mishandling of evidence
  • Documenting deficiencies in the FBI’s counterterrorism program
  • Requiring the FBI to create whistleblower protection for FBI agents for the first time in U.S. history
  • Forcing the FBI to accredit its crime lab
  • Forcing the Attorney General to withdraw gag orders on government employees who desired to expose ethical violations to members of Congress
  • Successfully working with Congress to ensure passage of critical whistleblower protection laws, such as the No-Fear Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Corporate Whistleblower Protection Act, and the Civil Rights Tax Relief Act
  • Forcing President Bush to withdraw his nomination for head of enforcement at the Environmental Protection Agency due to his former retaliation against whistleblowers
  • Preventing federal agencies from gagging employee speech critical of agency policies
  • Banning “hush money” payments for all environmental and nuclear federal safety cases
  • Exposing the vulnerabilities of U.S. nuclear power plants to airborne terrorist attacks and forcing reforms in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
  • Ensuring that military whistleblowers are informed of their rights by the Department of Defense
  • Permitting employees to pursue "mixed case" whistleblowers claims under the Whistleblower Protection Act.
  • Recovery of hundreds of millions of dollars for the United States Taxpayers from corrupt government contractors.
  • Protection of police officers by forcing defective bullet proof vests off the market.
  • Removing from the FBI crime lab forensic examiners who submitted false and misleading laboratory reports
  • Forcing the Department of Justice to review thousands of criminal convictions resulting in the release of innocent defendants from prison.
  • Forced the EPA to abandon its policy of promoting the land application of sewage sludge on farm land.
  • Exposing theft of "souvenirs" from the Ground Zero crime scene compelling the FBI to prohibit agents from removing property from crimes scenes.
  • Exposed the illegal no-bid contract between Halliburton and the Army Corps of Engineers for the reconstruction of Iraq after the 2003 invasion.
  • Obtained protection for workers at nuclear weapons plants under federal and state law.
  • Won Department of Labor ruling protecting whistleblowers who contacted NGO's or non-profit environmental groups.
  • Protected FBI agent who exposed civil rights violations harming child victims by violent sexual abuse.
  • Prevented the U.S. Government from using "tainted evidence" in the 1993 World Trade Center and 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing cases.

  • Establishing numerous legal precedents strengthening whistleblower protections for public and private sector employees, including expanding the scope of protected whistleblower speech, enjoining government regulations which restricted whistleblowing, and expanding the use of the Privacy Act to prevent the government from smearing its critics.
  • Strongest nation-wide record defending environmental and nuclear whistleblowers.
