Who We Are
The National Whistleblower Center (NWC) is the leading nonprofit dedicated to protecting and rewarding whistleblowers around the world. We assist whistleblowers in finding legal aid, advocate for stronger whistleblower protection laws, and educate the public about whistleblowers’ critical role in protecting democracy and the rule of law.
How We Work
Legal Assistance
Educating whistleblowers is a top priority of the National Whistleblower Center. NWC helps whistleblowers exercise their rights in the following ways:
- education and training through workshops, reports, and regular postings to our website, blog, email list, and social media channels
Whistleblowers who need legal assistance should review these resources.
Policy Advocacy
The National Whistleblower Center wages advocacy campaigns focused on protecting people and the environment from corruption – with whistleblowers serving in a critical leadership role.
These campaigns build on a long history of success. By mobilizing its grassroots supporters, bipartisan allies on the Hill, and other nonprofit organizations, NWC has generated substantial victories for whistleblowers in the U.S., including the recognition of National Whistleblower Day, the passage of the Taxpayer First Act, and a highly successful campaign against proposed harmful Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) rule changes. Over the years, NWC has also been instrumental in the enactment of key whistleblower protection and reward laws such as the Dodd-Frank Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act.
NWC has expanded its campaigns in recent years to include global advocacy for stronger protections. We have recently launched a campaign to strengthen whistleblower laws within the European Union ahead of the December 21, 2021, deadline to implement the Whistleblowing Directive.

Public Education
For over thirty years, the National Whistleblower Center has worked to educate the public on the importance of whistleblowers and the complex framework of whistleblowers laws in the United States and around the globe.
Through workshops, reports, and regular postings to our website, email list, and social media channels, NWC supports whistleblowers worldwide. NWC also works with journalists and media organizations on news and opinion pieces and publishes guest articles on Whistleblower News Network.
The National Whistleblower Center’s message is simple: whistleblowers are critical to combating waste, fraud, and abuse and preserving the rule of law and democracy. Working with law enforcement agencies can help address some of our most pressing issues, including climate change and threats to public health like the Covid-19 coronavirus.
NWC also works to improve public understanding of key U.S. whistleblower laws with transnational applications like the False Claims Act, Dodd-Frank Act, and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Through our website, as well as special reports and fact sheets, we discuss their purpose, history, and examples of how they can be used by whistleblowers around the world today to secure protection from retaliation and, in some cases, financial rewards for assisting with prosecutions.
