WASHINGTON, D.C. | June 10, 2025 — Over 20 tech safety advocacy groups have signed a letter urging Congress to support the AI Whistleblower Protection Act, a critical, bipartisan piece of legislation that would safeguard employees in the AI sector who speak out against wrongdoing and misconduct in the developing industry. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-CA), and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA).
The coalition’s letter, addressed to Bill Cassidy (R-LA.), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, emphasizes AI’s fast-growing influence on society and the importance of maintaining our national security by ensuring transparency and accountability within the AI industry. The organizations listed in the letter include the National Whistleblower Center, Americans for Responsible Innovation, Center for Democracy and Technology, and more.
“Congress has the opportunity to protect individuals who come forward in good faith and to reinforce the principle that safety, ethics, and accountability must accompany innovation,” the letter states, “Whistleblowers serve a valuable and necessary role in Congressional oversight, and in an age where AI systems influence everything from elections to defense systems, their protections are more urgent than ever.”
As the bill is currently undergoing committee review, it is crucial for advocacy groups and individuals to call on their representatives to vote in favor of this bill. We must ensure that AI whistleblowers have the legal protection to act in the best interest of the public.
