Representative Speier and Whistleblower Protection Caucus Co-Chairs Introduce House Resolution Designating July 30th as National Whistleblower Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. | July 30, 2021 — Today, Representative Jackie Speier (D-CA) and her Co-Chairs on the bipartisan House Whistleblower Protection Caucus, Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Representative Kathleen Rice (D-NY), introduced a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives expressing support for the designation of July 30, 2021 as “National Whistleblower Appreciation Day.” The National Whistleblower Center (NWC) commends the Congresswomen’s tireless commitment to stand beside whistleblowers and applauds the passage of this resolution.

Siri Nelson, NWC Executive Director, said, “Representative Speier, Representative Rice, and Representative Maloney have long been committed whistleblower advocates, and National Whistleblower Center deeply appreciates their ongoing support of National Whistleblower Day. The Congresswoman’s exemplary National Whistleblower Day speeches have always been a highlight of our program in any year that we have had the honor of her participation, which we are so grateful for again this year. Thank you, Representative Speier, for your continued leadership and consistent work to ensure whistleblowers are protected and recognized.”

“Whistleblowers are the moral compass for Congress and our country. They save billions of tax dollars each year. It’s past time that we honor these heroic individuals, many of whom know they will face retribution and retaliation for speaking out and still muster the courage to do so,” said Representative Jackie Speier, Co-Chair of the House Whistleblower Protection Caucus. “I’m proud to introduce my resolution to recognize their sacrifice and service to our country and thankful to have the support of the National Whistleblower Center and for their work to help whistleblowers.”

“This issue is not about politics, it is about accountability and the rule of law,” said Representative Kathleen Rice. “Many of our efforts to conduct government oversight and reform would not be possible if it weren’t for whistleblowers coming forward. The whistleblower system must be protected and preserved so brave individuals can continue to speak truth to power without fear of retaliation.”

The resolution was introduced today by Rep. Jackie Speier, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, and Rep. Kathleen Rice and cosponsored by Reps. André Caron (D-IN), Ed Case (D-HI), Stephen Lynch (D-MA) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). Representatives Speier and Rice spoke at National Whistleblower Day 2021 on Thursday, July 29th, 2021 in support of whistleblowers.
